So what does the Bible say bout stewardship of money?

How to Create a Biblical Financial Action Plan

Step #1: Acknowledge God as Owner

Key Principle: Everything you have belongs to God—you are a steward, not an owner.

"The earth is Yahweh’s (the LORD'S), with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell in it."
— Psalm 24:1

"Remember Yahweh your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth..."
— Deuteronomy 8:18

Practical Tip: Start your financial plan with prayer, dedicating all your money and resources to God’s control.

Step #2: Assess Your Financial Situation

Key Principle: Be diligent in knowing the state of your finances.

"Know well the state of your flocks, and pay attention to your herds..."
Proverbs 27:23

Simple Action Steps to Get a Clear Picture of Your Finances

  1. Figure out what you own vs. what you owe: Make a simple list of your assets-- everything you own that has value (like a car, savings, or cash). Then list the liabilities--everything you owe (like loans, credit cards, or unpaid bills). Subtract what you owe from what you own. That’s your net worth. Don't worry if it's negative right now—this step is just about knowing where you're starting.
  2. Write down your income and bills: Ask yourself, Where is my money going? List all your regular income (paychecks, side jobs, government benefits, etc.). Then list every monthly expense you can think of—rent, groceries, gas, debt payments, subscriptions—everything.
  3. Pay Attention to Extra Spending
Take a close look at your spending. Are there subscriptions you forgot about? Are you eating out more than you realized? Small things can add up quickly. Look for areas where you can cut back or make adjustments.

Step # 3: set god-honoring financial goals

Key Principle: Wise planning with God's guidance leads to success.

The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit...
— Proverbs 21:5

Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed.
— Proverbs 16:3

Examples of Faith-Based Goals:

  • Eliminate credit card debt
  • Build an emergency fund
  • Give more consistently
  • Save for a mission trip, church needs, or others in need

Step # 4: create and follow a spending plan (Budget)

Key Principle: Discipline in finances reflects a wise and godly heart.

No discipline seems to be joyful for the present, but sorrowful; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness...
— Hebrews 12:11

In the house of the wise is a store of choice food and oil...
— Proverbs 21:20

Practical Tools:

  • Monthly budget worksheet
  • Categories for giving, saving, housing, transportation, food, etc.
  • Use tools like envelope systems or spreadsheets

Note: The envelope system is a simple, hands-on budgeting method where you divide your cash into physical envelopes labeled for specific spending categories—like groceries, gas, or eating out. You decide ahead of time how much money goes into each envelope for the month (or week), and once the envelope is empty, you stop spending in that category. It helps prevent overspending and promotes discipline, because it limits you to only what you've budgeted. Today, you'll also find digital versions of the envelope system using apps or spreadsheets, which you can look into if you don’t want to carry cash.

Step #5: Pay Off Debt Diligently

Key Principle: Avoid and eliminate debt to experience greater freedom.

The borrower is servant to the lender.
— Proverbs 22:7

The wicked borrow, and don’t pay back, but the righteous give generously.
— Psalm 37:21

How should Christians handle debt? Here is a Christian financial action plan:

  • Use the debt snowball or avalanche method (you can zero in on the smallest debt first or start with the one that has the highest interest).
  • Build your own special purpose account for debt reduction
  • Make more than the minimum payment when possible
  • Celebrate small wins and remain consistent

Step # 6: Using a Christian Spending Tracker to Stay on Course

Key Principle: Diligently tracking your spending helps you align your money habits with God’s priorities.

"The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit, but everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty."
— Proverbs 21:5 (WEB)

A Christian spending tracker is more than a budgeting tool—it’s a way to walk in financial wisdom and purpose. By consistently recording your income and expenses, you become more aware of your patterns, helping you make adjustments that reflect your values and honor God.

Use a tracker to compare what you planned to spend with what you actually spent. It reveals leaks, patterns, and opportunities to grow in the area of biblical stewardship. Whether you use a paper tracker, a spreadsheet, or a trusted budgeting app, the goal is the same: faithfulness over time.

Practical Encouragement:
Tracking isn't about perfection—it's about progress. Small daily disciplines lead to long-term freedom and fruitfulness. Let your tracker be a tool for peace and clarity, not pressure.

Step #7: Trust in God as Your Provider in Every Season

Key Principle: No matter the economic climate or your current situation, God remains faithful to provide for your needs.

"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 4:19 (WEB)

"Cast your burden on Yahweh and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved."
— Psalm 55:22 (WEB)

Trusting God in the midst of financial hardship can be difficult, especially when we’re doing everything right yet still facing struggles.

Faithful biblical stewardship doesn’t mean you’re immune to financial challenges, but it does mean you’re not facing them alone. God sees your needs and promises to sustain you. In seasons of lack or abundance, your role is to trust and obey; His role is to provide and lead.

Now, just because we need to trust in God does not mean we just sit back and do nothing. Since our relationship with God should be cooperative, it's important to seek direction in terms of how to navigate the more difficult seasons when it comes to fiances.Another important passage is Proverbs 3:5-6:

Encouragement:
Tight seasons teach trust. Prosperous seasons teach generosity. In every season, keep your eyes on God—He’s your true Provider, not your paycheck. When you build your financial life on His promises, you can rest, even when circumstances feel uncertain.

No matter what season you're in, whether you're facing financial struggle, uncertainty, or abundance, God is faithful to provide. The Bible reassures us time and time again that He is our ultimate Provider, and we can trust in His promises. In Philippians 4:19 (WEB), we are reminded, "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."

When we're feeling anxious or overwhelmed, it's easy to forget that God knows our needs even before we ask (Matthew 6:8). Trusting Him means recognizing that His provision may not always come in the way we expect, but His timing is perfect, and His love for us is steadfast. So, whether you're in a season of plenty or one of lack, rest in the knowledge that God will sustain you, and He will always meet your needs—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Keep your eyes fixed on Him, and He will provide a way forward, no matter the circumstances.

Faithful biblical Stewardship Leads to freedom and fruitfulness

Finally, we should remember that the goal of financial freedom through faithful stewardship is not to pursue a life of luxury or self-indulgence. Instead, it is to serve God wholeheartedly and be a blessing to others.

When finances are constantly tight, it's only natural for money to become a daily source of stress and concern—out of sheer necessity. But when your financial life is healthy and in order, you're freer to focus your time, energy, and resources on advancing God's Kingdom.

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.” – 2 Corinthians 9:8 (WEB)

“But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Matthew 6:33 (WEB)

Closing Prayer and Blessing

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for entrusting us with all that we have—our time, talents, and treasures. Teach us to be wise and faithful stewards of every resource You've placed in our care. Help us to manage our finances in a way that honors You and reflects Your Kingdom values. Free us from worry and bondage to debt, and lead us into the peace and purpose that come from aligning our hearts with Yours. May we use what You provide not for selfish gain, but to serve You and bless others.

May the Lord give you wisdom to apply biblical stewardship to what He has entrusted to you, grace to walk in freedom from financial stress, and joy in knowing you are building treasure in heaven as you serve Him faithfully!

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
